A Thomasville resident complained to local police that roaches kept coming into her home. When the officers came to investigate, they found that the next door neighbor, Frank Shider, had been keeping 5,000 roaches as pets in his home. However, the roaches kept escaping.
"I didn't want to keep them in cages, cause when they would get tear my stuff up. So I just let 'em wander around the place." And wander they do. Florence Hendershaw, the neighbor that reported the roaches trespassing, said that she would like to see the roaches donated to a local zoo. "It ain't right to keep all those bugs in one house like that. And, when they come over , they ain't nice. They hissed at me!" Indeed, Mr. Shider's roaches are no ordinary roaches. They are the larger, more aggressive, Madagascar hissing roaches.
Shider claims to have purchased every single once of the exotic roaches. He has kept the receipts on all 5,000 and has a register of their names. Judge Clive Holder ruled that Mr. Shider had a right to keep the roaches as they were his property, but they must be kept in cages. Perhaps, Mr. Shider should get some good locks to keep them in the cages.
