Bob and Linda Simpson's home in Bailey Florida was destroyed by Hurricane Irma, but what their son found in their backyard was unbelievable.
The Simpson's had returned to what was left of their home to see if anything was salvageable when one of their three children wandered into the backyard, looking though some of the rubble, when he saw an area in the ground where a tree had been uprooted. He saw what looked to be some gold colored rocks embedded in the soil.
The 6-year-old boy pried one of the nuggets out and went to show his parents the "rock" he had found. Bob and Linda didn't really believe such a huge nugget was really gold — certainly a real gold nugget would not be so large and come from their back yard.
After the Simpsons left their property, they stopped at a local coffee shop at the edge of town for a snack. Their son was carrying the huge nugget with him and was showing it to an older gentleman who was there alone having a cup of coffee alone. The gentleman was Larry Sparks who owns Sparks; Pawn Shop nearby in Grant, Florida. Larry being an expert in precious metals recognized it as a legitimate gold nugget.
Sparks asked the boys parents why they were letting their boy carry around so much gold and they were shocked when Sparks informed them that the nugget was well worth over $5,000 dollars.
The Simpsons later had the nugget appraised and it turned out to be 4.07 ounces and worth $5,300.
However, that is not the end of the story. The Simpson's returned back to their demolished house where their son showed them where he found the gold nugget and they were astonished to find a motherload of large and small gold nuggets in the ground exposed by the unearthed tree.
Experts have inspected the area and what the Simpson's have so far dug up and they have indicates that the deposit could be worth upwards of $300 million.
This just goes to show that not every misfortune is truly a misfortune for some.
The Simpsons plan on donating a large amount of their fortune to Hurricane relief efforts in Florida.
