Indiana Fish and Wildlife were called to North Webster Wednesday morning to the report of local resident and fisherman David Grimes allegedly spotting a bull shark in Lake Webster on the east side. Indiana Fish and Wildlife officer Hugh Jorgan arrived at Sock's Marina on the east side of the lake and confirmed the shark to be a female 4 1/2 foot bull shark. "This is absolutely incredible!" exclaimed Jorgan, "although potentially a serious danger. This is a monumental occurrence as bull sharks have never been caught this deep in the intercontinental waterways of the United States, except some sightings in the Mississippi River." Unlike most sharks, bull sharks can live in both salt water and fresh water. Sharks prefer to attack in less than three feet of water , so fish and wildlife officers are in a scramble to find out for sure if their are pups and how the shark came to be in the lake. "The only way this shark could be found in this lake is if someone put it here. There is just no other explanation. Doing so is a highly illegal act, and if the person is discovered, he or she will face serious legal repercussions." So far only one shark has been sighted and has since been removed from the lake. Indiana Fish and Wildlife advises all to be cautious swimming off the shoreline and in the depths of the water as the Fourth of July festivities will make it prime hunting for sharks. If you see any sharks don't attempt to catch. Call your local Fish and Wildlife office and report. Thanks for your cooperation and have a safe holiday weekend.
