The DEEM group announced today that it plans to acquire local mechanical contractor Zone Mechanical.
Vice President of Operations, James Vickery stated that "DEEM is looking to increase its market share of mechanical services in the greater Chicagoland area, and the purchase of Zone Mechanical is going to help us realize that goal." Vickery also said that "about half of all current employees will receive job offers to stay on with DEEM."
Local markets in the Chicagoland area are heavily unionized. DEEM, being a contractor in typically non-union markets plans on utilizing the "split-shop" clause in local area agreements to allow their own personnel to integrate into territory already maintained by Zone Mechanical. Vickery said that "maintaining a one hundred percent unionized workforce is not foreseeable and would not fit in with our business model."
When discussing the purchase of Zone Mechanical with local union representative Ken Ruesken, he said "it is our desire to keep on as many union employees as possible." Ruesken also said he believes the company will retain a twenty to thirty percent unionized work force after the buyout is fully completed.
When discussing a time line of the buyout with Vickery, he said "current employees of DEEM have already been offered relocation allowances and we are planning on thirty to thirty five current employees to relocate to the area over the next month."
Vickery also said that all office operations currently located in Alsip, IL would be relocated to nearby Huntley, IL.
When discussing a time line, Vickery said "we have been in talks with (Zone) them for sometime. We plan on having this transition fully completed by June."
