The parent company of Mariano's grocery chain, Kroger's, announced this morning they will be bringing the chain to Northwest Indiana. Our immediate plans will remain in place,” Mariano said, noting that five stores under construction in the NWI area will continue as planned. Mariano's success in Chicago was a major reason for the deal, according to Kroger management. The company purchased the Strack and Van Tils grocery store chain which announced last week they were selling. Schlotman, the CFO, said Kroger does not plan to close any Strack's stores and suggested the company is open to expanding the Mariano's brand in a manner that wasn't previously possible given Strack's precarious financial state.
Kroger, the largest supermarket chain in the U.S. with more than 2,600 stores, has been scooping up regional operators to further its expansion. Last year, the grocer bought Harris Teeter, with stores in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, for about $2.5 billion. Kroger has turned in revenue growth for six straight quarters, helped by acquisitions as well as its growing natural and organics business.
